Ala. Senate Votes To End The Use Of Gas Chambers To Euthanize Animals

Montgomery - The Alabama State Senate voted today to ban the barbaric practice of using gas chambers to euthanize dogs and cats in animal shelters.

In a 27-0 vote Tuesday, senators passed a bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Del Marsh of Anniston. Marsh stated the support shows senators are committed to the humane

treatment of dogs and cats. The bill now goes to the House for consideration where it is expected to pass by a wide majority.

A dog named Beckman survived the gas chamber last year at Cullman County animal shelter and was the inspiration for the bill. Beckman was later adopted by a family from Maine where he remains today. Most shelters in Alabama have already ended the practice of using the gas chamber and with the passage of this bill it will become law.
